Cookie Policy

Effective 18 August 2026. This page describes, in specific and non-technical terms, the cookies and comparable browser-storage mechanisms that support Atalen's website. It lists every cookie by name, states its purpose and maximum lifespan, and explains how a reader can accept, limit, or withdraw consent at any time. Atalen keeps this list intentionally short and does not deploy any cookie beyond those described below. The intention behind this document is transparency rather than legal minimalism, so each section below goes into more operational detail than a typical short-form cookie notice, including the exact retention window, the storage location, and the practical effect of disabling each category.

1. Scope, definitions, and what this document covers

A cookie is a small text value that a browser stores on behalf of a website, either for the duration of a single visit or for a defined period afterwards. Some cookies are strictly necessary for basic page functions, some remember a reader's stated preference, and some support aggregate measurement of how pages are used. This policy applies to every page published under the Atalen domain and to any subdomain that Atalen may operate in the future, including any preview or staging environment that is made publicly reachable. It does not apply to cookies that a third-party site, reached by following a link from an Atalen article, may set once a reader leaves this website, since that site's own cookie notice governs those cookies instead. This document should be read together with the Privacy Policy, which describes the broader handling of personal data collected through the website, and with the Terms of Service, which describes acceptable use of the site as a whole; where a term used here is not separately defined, it carries the meaning given to it in the Privacy Policy.

2. Categories of storage technology in use

Atalen distinguishes between three broad categories of browser storage for the purpose of this policy: strictly necessary cookies, which are required for baseline site functionality; preference cookies, which remember a choice the reader has actively made; and measurement cookies, which support aggregate, non-identifying analysis of how pages are read. Atalen does not use fingerprinting techniques, cross-site tracking pixels, or any form of persistent local storage designed to survive a manual cookie deletion. Each cookie is first-party wherever technically possible, meaning it is set directly by the Atalen domain rather than by an embedded third party, with the narrow exception described in section 6 for embedded map content on the Contact page. Readers who wish to review the technical value of any cookie can do so through their browser's developer tools, typically accessible through an "Inspect" or "Storage" panel, without needing any specialised software.

3. Strictly necessary cookie: atalen_session

The cookie named atalen_session supports basic continuity between pages, such as remembering that a cookie banner has already been dismissed during the current visit, and typically expires within 24 hours or when the browser is closed, whichever happens first. It does not contain a name, email address, or any other directly identifying value; it stores only a randomly generated session marker that has no meaning outside the context of the current browsing session. Because this cookie is necessary for the website to function as intended, it is set automatically on first page load and is not subject to the optional consent choices described in section 8. Removing it manually, through browser settings, simply means that certain in-page states, such as an already-dismissed banner or a partially completed contact form, may reset on the next page load, without any lasting consequence to the reader's account or history, since Atalen does not operate reader accounts.

4. Preference cookie: atalen_cookie_choice

The cookie named atalen_cookie_choice records whether a reader selected "Accept All," "Accept Selected," or "Functional Only" in the cookie banner, and remains in place for up to 180 days from the date it is set, after which the banner will be shown again so the choice can be reconfirmed. Its value is a short code representing the chosen category and, where applicable, the individual toggles selected under "Accept Selected"; it is not a name, email address, or browsing history, and cannot on its own be linked back to a specific individual. This cookie exists specifically so that a reader is not asked to make the same choice on every single page during a return visit within the stated 180-day period, which materially improves the reading experience without requiring any account or sign-in. A reader can clear this cookie through their browser's privacy settings at any time, which will cause the cookie banner to reappear and invite a fresh choice on the next page visited.

5. Measurement cookie: atalen_measure

Where a reader selects "Accept All" or otherwise enables measurement through the "Accept Selected" panel, an anonymous analytics cookie named atalen_measure may be set for a period of up to 13 months, in line with common industry practice for aggregate website statistics. This cookie helps Atalen understand, in aggregate and non-identifying form, which articles are read most often, which pages readers arrive from, roughly how long a page is viewed, and broad categories of device and browser used to reach the site; it is not used to build an individual profile of any single reader and is never combined with a name or email address. Reports produced from this data are reviewed only in aggregate by Atalen's editorial team to guide future coverage decisions, such as which supplement-related topics merit a follow-up article, and are not shared with advertisers or sold to any third party. Selecting "Functional Only" in the cookie banner prevents this cookie from being set at all, and any measurement cookie already present is deleted within 24 hours of that choice being made.

6. Third-party and embedded content cookies

Where an article or the Contact page embeds third-party content, such as the location map referenced in the Contact page, the provider of that embedded element may set its own cookie once the embed loads, under that provider's own notice rather than this one. Atalen limits the use of such embeds to cases where the added functionality is genuinely useful to the reader, such as helping a visitor locate the editorial office at Jalan Kebayoran Baru No. 23 without leaving the site entirely. Atalen does not control the specific cookies that a third-party embed provider sets, does not receive a copy of any cookie data collected by that provider, and recommends that a reader consult that provider's own cookie or privacy notice for full technical detail. Where practical, Atalen selects embed providers that offer a privacy-conscious loading mode or a click-to-load option, and will continue to evaluate lower-footprint alternatives as they become available.

7. Cookie duration summary

To make comparison straightforward, the three cookies described above have the following maximum lifespans measured from the date each is set: atalen_session persists for 24 hours or until the browser session ends, whichever occurs first; atalen_cookie_choice persists for up to 180 days; and atalen_measure, where enabled, persists for up to 13 months before it expires automatically and must be reset if measurement remains enabled. No cookie described in this policy is renewed silently beyond its stated maximum lifespan through repeated visits; each cookie is simply reissued with a fresh expiry date the next time the relevant action, such as dismissing the banner again, takes place. Where Atalen shortens a retention period in a future update, the shorter period will apply to cookies set after that update takes effect, and the change will be reflected in the revision log in section 12.

8. Legal basis and consent choices

Cookies that are strictly necessary for the website to operate, such as the session cookie described in section 3, are set without requesting separate consent, consistent with common regulatory approach of such cookies under applicable data protection law. Cookies that are not strictly necessary, such as the measurement cookie described in section 5, are set only after a reader makes an affirmative choice in the cookie banner shown on first visit, consistent with the consent-based legal ground described in the Privacy Policy. A reader who selects "Accept Selected" is shown the specific categories available and can enable or disable each individually before confirming, rather than being presented with a single all-or-nothing choice. Consent, once given, remains associated with the preference cookie described in section 4 and can be withdrawn at any time using the method described in section 9, with withdrawal taking effect on the next page load rather than requiring a full day to process.

9. Managing or withdrawing consent

A reader can open the cookie preference panel at any time using the "Cookie Settings" link found in the footer of every page, and can change a previous choice from that panel without needing to contact Atalen directly or wait for confirmation. Every common browser also provides a built-in control for viewing, blocking, or deleting cookies on a per-site basis, typically found in the browser's privacy or security settings menu, and Atalen encourages readers unfamiliar with this control to consult their browser's help documentation. Blocking all cookies will generally still allow a reader to browse and read articles on Atalen, though the cookie banner may reappear on each new visit because the preference cookie itself will not be able to persist between sessions. Atalen does not use any technique intended to circumvent a reader's browser-level cookie controls, such as respawning a deleted cookie from a server-side backup, and does not intend to adopt such a technique in the future.

10. Retention, deletion, and server-side aggregate data

Each cookie described above is deleted automatically by the browser once its stated lifespan elapses, without any further action required from the reader or from Atalen. Where aggregate measurement data derived from the atalen_measure cookie is stored server-side rather than only in the browser, that aggregate data is retained for up to 26 months before being deleted, consistent with the retention description given in section 4 of the Privacy Policy. A reader can accelerate deletion of the browser-stored cookie at any point by clearing cookies through their browser, which removes the locally stored values immediately regardless of the stated maximum lifespan, though this does not retroactively delete aggregate statistics already recorded before that point. Atalen does not reconstruct a deleted cookie's prior value once it has been cleared, and a fresh cookie set afterwards is treated as a new, unrelated value with no link back to the earlier one.

11. International transfers relating to cookies

Where a measurement cookie is enabled, aggregate statistics derived from it may be processed on servers operated by Atalen's hosting or analytics provider outside Indonesia, as described in more detail in section 8 of the Privacy Policy. Atalen selects providers that apply a recognised transfer safeguard, such as a data processing agreement incorporating standard contractual clauses, for this category of aggregate, non-identifying data. No cookie described in this policy is used to transfer directly identifying information, such as a name or email address, to a location outside Indonesia, since the cookies themselves do not carry such information in the first place. A reader who would like more detail about a specific transfer arrangement, including the identity of the recipient country, may write to the contact address given in section 12 and can expect a substantive reply within the timeframe stated there.

12. Contact, complaints procedure, and revision history

Questions or complaints about this Cookie Policy can be sent to [email protected], by telephone to +62 21 2184 7207 during office hours of Monday to Friday, 09:00 to 17:00 Western Indonesia Time, or by post to Jalan Kebayoran Baru No. 23, 12190 Jakarta Selatan, DKI Jakarta, Indonesia. Atalen aims to acknowledge a cookie-related question or complaint within two business days and to provide a full, substantive response within 30 calendar days; if a matter requires longer investigation, Atalen will explain the reason for the delay and give a revised expected date in writing. This version, effective 18 August 2026, added the specific 13-month lifespan detail for the measurement cookie described in section 5, introduced the duration summary now found in section 7, and clarified the third-party embed language in section 6. The previous version, dated 2 February 2026, first introduced the atalen_measure cookie following the addition of aggregate analytics to the website, and the original version, dated 20 October 2025, described only the session and preference cookies that existed at launch, before any measurement functionality had been added to the site.
